Mobility Scooters

There are many types of mobility scooters. Whether you are choosing an electric mobility scooter for in-home use, for ease of portability or for strictly off-road usage, it is important to know what options are available.  Let GCM’s evaluators help you make an informed decision.

We have carried Pride Mobility products for years and is our standard go-to offering.  As one of the leaders in the mobility industry Pride keeps you going even when your body cannot.

You do have the option to upgrade whether it is for higher clearance, or add-ons like a basket or cup holder, however most add-ons and upgrades are not covered by insurance.

One of the main reasons people request scooters are to use them outside of the home.  Scooters are perceived to be a viable means to drive to the store or other community locations.

Scooters are often used to replace one’s automobile. It is a dangerous practice to operate a scooter or wheelchair on the road.  Scooter and wheelchair users are more likely to be hit in traffic than pedestrians and 3 times more likely to be killed.  It is believed that the driver’s line of vision is such that a person sitting in either a scooter or wheelchair is not seen.

Insurance companies have long since recognized the trend to use scooters for outdoors and some have excluded scooters from their benefits.  The few insurance companies that still contain scooters in their benefits limit the use of the scooter to in home use with limited community access i.e., physician appointments, church, or shopping.

The scooter must be transported via personal vehicle or public transportation from point A to point B, not driven from point A to point B. Scooters were not designed to travel over sidewalks or on roads for extended distances.

Scooter/POV

A vehicle ridden while seated that has three or four wheels and is steered and operated by a bicycle type handlebar / tiller system.

Scooters are not easily used in a home, they are often too big to fit through doorways or its too tight of a turn, cannot turn around in hallways, and cannot maneuver around furniture.  An example of using a scooter in the house is compared to using a riding lawnmower in the home.

FAQ

My doctor wrote a prescription.  Will I receive my equipment today?

Most people think once they have seen their practitioner and an order is written the powered mobility device will be ordered immediately. This is not the case. Paperwork must be completed and gathered from multiple sources then submitted for Prior Approval from your insurance provider.
As scooters are non-assigned through GCM even with Prior Authorization the scooter must be paid for up front before delivery will be made.

Equipment Selection

Insurance covers equipment based off of medical necessity and all items that go through insurance must be on Medicare’s PDAC for it to be eligible.  POVs are broken down by weight limit, 0-300, 300-450, 450+.

GCMs goal is customer service.  We will work with the client, though we will no longer accept insurance assignment, we will providing education and other options to their independent i.e., non-assignment and portable wheelchairs more suited for the home.
